children with
hearing loss

My child has a hearing loss – what's the next step?

In Singapore, most hospitals perform routine hearing screening within the first 48 hours after birth, this is known as newborn hearing screening. If any child were to fail the screening or are flagged to be at risk of hearing loss he or she will be scheduled by the hospital for a repeat check-up. However, in some cases children may only exhibit signs of hearing loss at a later age. Reasons for childhood hearing loss may be permanent or temporary and be result from:

  • Genetic causes
  • Birth complications
  • Premature birth
  • Unhealthy lifestyle during pregnancy (Smoking and alcohol)
  • Ototoxic medications
  • Serious head injury
  • Untreated ear infections (otitis media)
